The 494 visa is a regional skilled worker visa that was introduced in November 2019. It allows skilled workers to live and work in regional areas of Australia for up to 5 years.

To be eligible for the 494 visa,
applicants must meet several requirements, including

  • Being nominated by a regional employer that has been approved by the Department of Home Affairs.

  • Having a relevant occupation that is on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).

  • Having the relevant skills and qualifications for the nominated occupation.

  • Meeting the English language requirements.

The 494 visa has two streams

  • Employer-Sponsored Stream: This stream is for skilled workers who are sponsored by a regional employer for a full-time position in a regional area of Australia.

  • Labour Agreement Stream: This stream is for skilled workers who are sponsored by an employer who has a labour agreement with the Australian Government.

Skilled subclass 491

The 491 visa is a points-based skilled worker visa that was introduced in November 2019. It allows skilled workers to live and work in regional areas of Australia for up to 5 years.

To be eligible for the 491 visa,
applicants must meet several requirements, including

  • Having a relevant occupation that is on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).

  • Obtaining a suitable skills assessment for the nominated occupation.

  • Meeting the minimum points requirement, which is currently set at 65 points.

  • Being nominated by a state or territory government agency or sponsored by an eligible family member who is living in a designated regional area of Australia.

  • Meeting the English language requirements.

The 491 visa has two streams

  • State/Territory Nominated Stream: This stream is for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government agency

  • Family-Sponsored Stream: This stream is for skilled workers who are sponsored by an eligible family member who is living in a designated regional area of Australia

Regional Visa
Permanent subclass 191

The 191 visa is a permanent residency visa that will be available from November 2022 for subclass 491 and 190 visa holders who have lived and worked in regional Australia for at least three years.

To be eligible for the 191 visa,
applicants must meet several requirements, including

  • Holding a current subclass 491 or 494 visa at the time of application.

  • Having lived and worked in a designated regional area of Australia for at least three years while holding a subclass 491 or 190 visa.

  • Meeting the income requirement for the period of residence in regional Australia.

  • Meeting health and character requirements.
