The 189 visa is a points-tested visa that allows skilled workers from overseas to live and work in Australia permanently. This visa does not require sponsorship from an employer, and applicants can live and work anywhere in Australia.

To be eligible for the 189 visa,
applicants must meet several requirements, including

  • Having a relevant occupation that is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

  • Having their skills assessed by the relevant Australian assessing authority.

  • Meeting the points test requirement of at least 65 points, based on factors such as age, English language proficiency, work experience, and education.

  • Meeting health and character requirements.

Once the 189 visa is granted, the visa holder is entitled to live and work in Australia permanently, and they can also include their family members in the visa application. The 189 visa holders are also eligible to apply for Australian citizenship, provided they meet the relevant eligibility criteria.

It's important to note that the 189 visa is a points-tested visa category with specific requirements and processes, so it's advisable to consult with a registered migration agent or immigration lawyer to ensure that you meet all the requirements and have the best chance of a successful visa application.
